Bury emerged victorious in their first FA Cup match since 2018 coming from behind to beat Uttoxeter Town 4-1 at Gigg Lane.
In a match where Bury were the nominal “away” side it was the “home” side for the day Uttoxeter who took the lead in the 11th minute. Mike Conlon afforded too much space in the centre of the park took a speculative shot that cannoned off Bury’s Dan Lafferty and looped over Jack Atkinson in the Bury goal.
The setback could have been worse for the Shakers. A cross to an unmarked Paul Hughes forced a great save from Atkinson, from that however Bury countered. The clearance made its way to Connor Comber, his cross found Benito Lowe who slotted the equaliser into the bottom corner.
The goal sparked a revival for the team in white. Debutant Abs Obasoto had already made chances for Gilboy and Lowe when his own attempt on goal flashed across the Town’s six-yard box. Bury took the lead shortly after the half-hour mark when Obasoto’s cross found Higgins at the far post to head home.
The Shakers pushed for the security of a two-goal cushion but couldn’t manage to find a way past Uttoxeter keeper Charlie Woods. Comber shot over the bar after a slick passing move with Lowe just before half-time and after the break Comber’s header from an Obasoto cross was brilliantly saved by Woods.
When Comber was again denied by Woods shooting from a Gaz Peet pull back Bury may have felt their luck was running out but a moment of magic from Benito Lowe gave them the goal they craved. Running down the byline with the ball Lowe weaved his way past one defender and from a tight angle fired the ball into the top corner.
The rout was complete in stoppage time as Peet was felled in the opposition box. Connor Comber grabbed the goal his efforts deserved and cemented Bury’s place in the next round of the FA Cup.
