Managerless Bury shook off the disappointment of the last few days to record a convincing win away at Squires Gate in difficult conditions.
Heavy rain through the day had put the match going ahead into question however by kick off the rain had moved on replaced by the usual blustery conditions expected for an evening on the Fylde coast.
The match had barely begun before a clash of heads between two Squires Gate players caused a lengthy delay. Both were given head bandages and a new shirt before the match could continue.
The first real chance also came about from another blow to the head, Andy Briggs caught by a high foot won a free kick. In a smart routine Chris Rowney laid the ball off with a backheel for Connor Comber to blast the ball goalwards, he hit the post.
Bury looked lively throughout the first half with Jones-Griffiths, Briggs and Brazel all forcing chances while the wing play of Comber and the advanced Gaz Peet stretched the home defence.
Squires Gate did have opportunities of their own but were quickly snuffed out by a resolute Bury back four. Their best chance fell to Liam Birchall after a long ball forward deceived Jordi Nsaka. The Bury full-back recovered just in time to prevent Birchall from taking a shot and a strong challenge from Jimmy Moore ended the attack for good.
Bury went into the break at half-time having played well but without having scored. This was remedied shortly after the restart. Chris Rowney is rarely a man in on the attack but played in from the left by Peet found himself with plenty of time and space. He fired hard and low towards goal and beat home keeper Nathan Pennington at the bottom left corner to score his first goal from open play in more than two years.
Bury pushed for a second goal, a long-range shot by Briggs was well saved by Pennington who was on point a few minutes later to cut out a pass from Briggs that would have left Brazel with an open goal. The hosts also had their chances a Ryan Riley free kick was placed just wide of goal and Jordi Nsaka had to be called upon to break up a quick counter-attack before a cross could be sent in. A second goal was needed.
It arrived just after the hour. A Bury free kick from deep right was sent in by Gaz Peet. It appeared Pennington would catch the lofted ball as it approached the box but the Squires Gate keeper spilled the ball at the crucial moment and directly to the feet of Comber who tapped home from close range.
Bury could have further extended their lead; a Nsaka cross flashed across the six-yard box, a Shakeel Jones-Griffith shot was tipped over the bar, Lewis Gilboy fired a good chance wide and Abs Obasoto had a late chance well saved by Pennington but the two goals would be enough.
Greater attention was paid at the other end of the pitch as the Shakers finally recorded their first clean sheet of the season, a late James Hughes shot was well saved and held by Jack Atkinson who was largely untroubled all night.
The final whistle delivered a well-deserved three points for an impressive, collective all-round performance.
