The Shakers emerged victorious away to Glossop North End on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Bryan Ly, Ruben Jerome, Josh Gregory and Iyrwah Gooden rounding off a 4-2 win.

The trip to Derbyshire coming less than two days since the team returned from the Isle of Man away match fixtures are coming thick and fast for Dave McNabb’s side. Josh Gregory and Connor Pye were recalled to the defence while Iyrwah Gooden was preferred to Alex Cherera on the wing.

The match got off to the worst possible start for the Shakers, a clumsy trip in the Bury box giving away an early penalty. Lewis Reilly stepped up to take the spot kick and sent Mitch Allen the wrong way to give the Hillmen an early lead.

In response Ly had a shot on goal well saved by goalkeeper Charlie Gladwin and Ruben Jerome turned two defenders inside out on the left wing but his cross into the box couldn’t find a target.

Bury grabbed an equaliser thanks to Bryan Ly. A long diagonal ball from Ben Hockenhull reached Bebeto Gomes, the Shakers full back weaved his way in behind the Glossop defence and pulled the ball back for Ly to blast past the keeper to level the match.

From there Bury always looked the more likely to score next. A Ly free kick was fired in with pace, it found a Bury head but it was deflected over.

Bury took the lead shortly before halftime, again with Ly involved. His cross from the right was brought down by Gooden at the far post and finished from very close range by Ruben Jerome.

The second half continued as the first half had ended and it wasn’t long before Bury grabbed their third goal. Good play down the right hand side between Rustam Stepans and Ly set Jerome free to send a cross into the Glossop penalty area. The defence cleared behind for a corner with Lewis Alessandra lurking at the far post. The Hillmen failed to clear the corner with the loose ball up in the air. Glossop keeper Gladwin attempted to come out and claim it but was nowhere near when the ball fell to Josh Gregory. With the keeper in no man’s land Gregory’s looping header went unchallenged as it landed in back of the net.

The Shakers continued to push on, Connor Pye saw his shot blocked after getting on the end of a Ly corner while a deft touch by Stepans to Ly set the Bury number 10 free but his shot was high and wide.

Bury’s got their fourth on 70 minutes. A Stepans free kick from deep right found substitute Lewis Earl. He pulled the ball back to Gooden who finished well into the bottom corner.

From there it looked as though Bury might score a hatful more but the hosts recovered and looked to stage a late comeback. Bury stopper Mitch Allen spilled a cross and the loose ball had to be hooked off the line by Hockenhull. There was no reprieve minutes later however when Reilly squared the ball to Tom Lawless who fired home from close range.

Glossop had Bury on the back foot for much of the closing moments of the match, conceding another could spell disaster for the Shakers but the defence held firm. The visitors could have put the result beyond doubt with a late chance for substitute Alex Cherera but despite rounding the keeper Cherera’s shot was blocked and the rebound fired wide.

The full time whistle rang out giving Bury their sixth league win of the season. Next up is a return to FA Cup action and the long hornet north to Blyth Spartans.
