Ten-man Bury suffered a heartbreaking late defeat away to Glossop North End as their recent run of form came to a sad end.
Facing a wet day on a sodden pitch Bury manager Dave McNabb rang the changes adding debutants Andy Scarisbrick and Charlie Doyle and reintroducing Lewis Gilboy and Benito Lowe to the starting lineup.
From the start, Bury looked the stronger of the two sides. Scarisbrick wanted to make a mark with his new club and almost scored early with a shot that went just wide. Shortly afterwards Benito Lowe cleared the Hillman bar from a Matty Williams cross and Gaz Peet dragged his shot wide after good work on the wings from Connor Comber and Chris Rowney.
Against the run of play the home side took the lead. A long throw-in was not dealt with by the Shakers defence and the ball bounced kindly for Harry Freedman to score from close range.
Bury tried to respond with a Peet free-kick going just over, a Lowe volley that went wide and a drilled Gilboy effort that flashed across the Glossop goal.
As it was it took a near disaster for Bury to break down the hosts. A Jack Atkinson clearance was blocked by Moses Yoak who followed through and tackled the Bury keeper. With the referee unmoved and the goal gaping Glossop number 9 Matthew Gillam had an open net to aim for but his effort was blocked at the last by Bury captain Dan Lafferty. From there the ball was worked out to the right wing first through Williams, then Gilboy, then onto Lowe who squared the ball to Scarisbrick who slammed home a debut goal to bring the away side level.
Bury could have entered half-time with the lead but Lowe’s shot shortly after the equaliser was well blocked and Lafferty’s goal from a Peet free-kick was quickly ruled out for offside.
Bury came out into the second half with the belief of winning the contest having been much the better side in the opening 45 minutes. However, with some five yellow cards shown in the opening period there were concerns over discipline and so it proved. The second half had barely begun when a high tackle by Peet on Yoak had the referee reaching for his red card and Bury would have to see out nearly half the match a man down.
Despite this disadvantage, the Shakers continued to look the side most likely with multiple chances for Lowe thwarted by Hillman keeper Louis Hood as well as opportunities for Moore, Doyle, and substitute Jordi Nsaka. At the other end, Atkinson had to be on hand to tip a goalbound header onto the bar.
The rain continued to pour, softening the pitch further and dampening spirits in the stands. The match entered stoppage time and the tiring ten men of Bury having withstood a long series of corners finally broke with a David Badrock header from a corner winning the day in the 97th minute.
