On a horrendously wet and windy afternoon at Kearsley Academy, Bury produced a performance Jason Jarrett described as “a great one” in an ever-important league fixture. Regarding the weather he called it “vile”. With the new influx of signings and departures from the club in recent weeks, it was three of the more experienced players who got the all-important goals. (Emma Mackie, Chloe Greenall, and Murron Alldread)
Inside the first 4 minutes Mackie, in her attempt to clear, saw the ball loop over the Fleetwood goalkeeper. The weather certainly had something to do with the way Bury led but no one really cared.
Seconds before the 30th minute, Fleetwood found a very fortunate equaliser as Mackie played a lethargic back pass to Beth Powney, who cleared against Fleetwood’s Imogen Hill, and subsequently bobbled into the Bury net for the leveller.
After a tightly fought and congested start to the second half, Fleetwood looked the better side. They were unable to make their authority count as Powney remained untested.
Bury took the initiative, with 20 minutes remaining Chloe Greenall was neatly played in down Bury’s right-hand side. On the angle, she fizzed it past the Fleetwood keeper, Libby Walmsley and Bury led once again. This victory took them level on points with Fleetwood with 3 games in hand as well. The excellent Bury performance didn’t end there though.
Shortly before the end, Mackie played a beautiful, defence-splitting pass to Murron Alldread. She spun, shot, and found the Fleetwood net for number 3. That put the seal on another important 3 points for the Shakers to make it 6 games without defeat inside 90 minutes.
As Bury continue to climb the table, could we look back on this run of results as the period where Bury established themselves as real promotion contenders in consecutive seasons?
